#hardtocallthiswork
I love my job and when I occasionally post up on socials I use the hashtag #hardtocallthiswork. This page highlights some of the most fun I’ve had in my recent experience as a videographer, whether it’s travelling around our beautiful Highlands of Scotland ‘working’ from the campervan with my partner Libby or being lucky enough to film a music festival in Barbados!
My band Bensider will also feature here.
I have a had a lifelong love of photography, but more as a hobby. Some of my snaps are on my Instagram page here - https://www.instagram.com/hebrideansnapper/
I hope you enjoy

Silver Sands - Mallaig
I was commissioned to make recruitment films for NHS Highland and of course it made sense to combine the shoot with some campervan adventures! Libby comes along on these shoots and helps out on location wherever she can, or keeping the client company while I set up. This was shot on our way up to film in beautiful Mallaig and features out trip through Glencoe and our arrival at the stunning Silver Sands campsite.

Van chef
Picking up where we left off as we arrived at Silver Sands, this clip is an example of cooking up a feast in our campervan. This one was a sweet potato, red pepper and spinach curry, washed down with a cold beer of course!

Barbados Celtic Festival
What a job!! We spent a week in Barbados filming the Barbados Celtic Festival. It was really tough working in the intense heat and we had a crazy schedule.. Filming all day then editing together a social media film and uploading it each night. 16 hour days for most of the week. After the Festival we stayed on for an extra week just to relax and take in the beauty of this amazing place and it’s people.. we hope to return someday!

Bensider
Music is my passion, (or at least one of them!) In my spare time I play with my band Bensider, I started writing songs at the grand old age of 42 and still really enjoy it. Although I’ll never be that comfortable performing on stage I love the feeling of collaborating musically with Libby and the rest of the band, who are now really great friends too.
This photo was taken on stage at the EDF festival in Benbecula.
You can listen to our music here - https://bensider.bandcamp.com/

New Years Waltz
Making this video for Bensider in my downtime was hugely enjoyable, I combined filming with trips back home to Lewis to visit family, (My mum, daughters and nephew all feature in the video)
I also made the trip home specially to capture the accordion player Iain Angus on Luskentyre beach on Harris. The weather didn’t quite shine for us that day but it still looks amazing!
New Year’s Waltz is a slight departure from Bensider as it is leaning towards the more “traditional” sound of the Highlands. I’m immensely proud of both the song and video for New Year’s Waltz.
I very much hope to share it widely as we celebrate each New Year to come!

Phil Cunningham - Narrow Sea, The Farther Shore
I occasionally do photography work, but generally candid, non studio based projects. This one was just great fun!
I was pretty nervous turning up at the studios near Maryhill, Glasgow for the shoot, a bit out of my comfort zone without my video kit. The job - stills photographer on the BBC programme ‘NARROW SEA, THE FARTHER SHORE’ with Phil Cunningham.
The crew were there for pre-recording musical performances from Phil Cunningham and several musicians that would form part of the programme.
Once I arrived I realised that I knew a lot of the assembled musical talent anyway as I’d filmed lots of them during my years of working for the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, this put me at ease straight away… It also helped that the Studio Director that day was the one and only John Smith, not only a hugely talented creative but part of the family as he is my Uncle.
The experience was just great and this shot of Phil really sums up the day for me, loads of fun and amazing music..
What more could you ask for…?
